Today is the World Wildlife Day
Today we celebrate the World Wildlife Day, and even though, Costa Rica is always bragging about protecting wildlife and being a “green” country, things could be farther away from the truth.
This March 3rd, the jaguar can celebrate, sea turtles can celebrate, even frogs have a reason to celebrate But hammerhead sharks have nothing to celebrate. For Costarican authorities this endangered species is a commercial product of fisheries and can not be protected using Costa Rica’s wildlife conservation legislation. This situation obviously favor shark fin exporters. So, there is a Hammerhead shark fin stockpile in Puntarenas, waiting for its exportation.
Yes! In Costa Rica, endangered sharks are not considered wildlife.
This goes completely against UN’s objective 14 for Sustainable Development which is to conserve and use the oceans, seas, and marine resources in a sustainable way.
Even more ironic is that this years World Wildlife Day is dedicated to marine wildlife.
Shame on you Costa Rica.
Sharks are wildlife too!!!!
