Illegal Hawksbill Sea Turtle Jewelry Confiscated at Christmas Fair

Officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Telecommunications (MINAET), along with representatives from Costa Rican NGOs Pretoma, the Caribbean Conservation Corporation, and Widecast, confiscated illegal jewelry made from endangered hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) shells for sale at the Christmas festival in Guadalupe.  MINAET officials in street clothes and NGO members walked through the various temporary craft shops that line the barrio’s central park this holiday season, confirming that hawksbill rings and bracelets were for sale.  After the shops were pinpointed, uniformed officials moved in and confiscated over 300 illegal hawksbill rings and several bracelets.  A judge will rule on the individual cases and the jewelry will more than likely be destroyed. Forum of Experts Discuss Bill to Demote Leatherback National Park

A panel of six experts convened at the University of Costa Rica in front of an audience of over 70 students, conservationists, and academics, to present their different points of view regarding development and conservation issues that surround the future of Las Baulas National Park in Guanacaste.  Passionate arguments were offered for and against bill 17.383 which proposes to demote the park to a Wildlife Refuge.  Also in attendance were local community members whose future will be affected one way or another from the outcome.  While nothing was decided, it became clear that a greater dialogue was needed between long term property owners, investors, neighboring communities, grass roots organizations, national conservation organizations, and government officers to save the leatherback sea turtles of Las Baulas.

Pretoma denounces shrimp trawler for invading the waters of the Caletas Ario National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica

On December 2nd, members of Pretoma appeared at an Oral and Private Hearing before Incopesca’s Direction of Judicial Fisheries Procedures, to refer to a suit filed by them against the shrimp trawler “Luis Guillermo”, which was caught on video operating illegally in the protected waters of the Caletas-Ario National Wildlife Refuge, during the night of last April 17, 2009 (watch video).  Prior to the hearing, the defense lawyer’s request for the process be “definitely revoked”, was duly rejected.  A final resolution by the Direction is expected during the next few months.  Read submitted law suit (Spanish only).

Artisanal fishing presidents voice their opinions on sustainable management of the Golfo Dulce

“As Presidents of the six small-scale artisanal fishing associations which gather 186 fishermen, we hereby state and emphasize that we support the creation of the Marine Area for Responsible Fishing and we request an explanation and a clarification of the false declarations published in this magazine on November 27th 2009.

In regards with the information which has circulated after the press release disclosed by Pretoma and a group of commercial fishermen who do not practice artisan fishing activities, it is important to clarify that Mr. Victor Rocha in this opportunity acted on behalf of the Civic Front of Golfito’s Fishing Sector, group to which we do not belong since we are small-scale artisan fishermen.”

Decomisan artesanía de carey ilegal en Feria Navideña

Oficiales del Ministerio de Ambiente y Telecomunicaciones (MINAET), junto con representantes de las Pretoma, la Caribbean Conservation Corporation, y Widecast, decomisaron joyería ilegal elaborada a partir del caparazón de la tortuga marina de carey (Eretmochelys imbricata), los cuales se vendían en la Feria Navideña de Guadalupe.  Primero, oficiales de MINAE vestidos de civil y los miembros de las ONGs caminaron por los puestos de artesanías ubicados en el Parque Central de la comunidad, y confirmaron la venta de anillos y brazaletes de carey.  Luego de identificar los puestos, oficiales uniformados procedieron al decomiso de más de 300 anillos de carey y varios brazaletes.  Un Juez será quien decida sobre los casos individuales, y lo más probable es que la joyería sea destruida. Foro de Expertos para Discutir Proyecto de Ley para Degradar Protección del Parque Nacional Las Baulas.

Un panel de seis expertos convinieron en la Universidad de Costa Rica ante una audiencia de 70 estudiantes, conservacionistas, y académicos, para presentar sus diferentes puntos de vista sobre temas de desarrollo y conservación en torno al futuro del Parque Nacional Las Baulas, en Guanacaste.  Fueron ofrecidos argumentos apasionados a favor y en contra de la propuesta de ley 17.383, que consiste en reducir la categoría de manejo a Refugio de Vida Silvestre.  También estuvieron presentes miembros de comunidades locale
s cuyo futuro será afectado de una manera u otra por el resultado.  Aunque no se llegó a ninguna decisión, resultó claro que era necesario un mayor diálogo entre todos los sectores de la sociedad para salvar a las tortugas baula de este Parque Nacional, incluyendo a propietarios desde hace largo plazo, inversionistas, comunidades aledañas, organizaciones comunales, organizaciones de conservación nacional, y oficiales del Gobierno.

Pretoma denuncia barco camaronero de arrastre por invadir las aguas del Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Caletas-Ario, Costa Rica

El pasado 2 de diciembre miembros de Pretoma se presentaron a una comparecencia Oral y Privada ante el Órgano Director de Procedimiento Jurídico Pesquero del Incopesca, para referirse a la denuncia interpuesta por ellos contra la embarcación “Luís Guillermo”, la cual fue sorprendida con video operando ilegalmente dentro de las aguas protegidas del Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Caletas-Ario, durante la noche del pasado 17 de Abril del 2009 (Ver Video).  Previo a la comparecencia, el abogado defensor solicitó una revocatoria definitiva al proceso, pero fue debidamente rechazada.  Se espera una resolución final del Órgano Director durante los siguientes meses.

Presidentes de asociaciones de pesca artesanal opinan sobre el manejo sostenible del Golfo Dulce

“Como presidentes de las seis asociaciones de pesca artesanal de pequeña escala que agrupan a 186 pescadores, apoyamos la conformación del Área Marina para la Pesca Responsable, y solicitamos aclarar las declaraciones incorrectas publicadas en este medio el 27 de noviembre del 2009.

Con respecto a las informaciones que han circulado con base en el comunicado de prensa divulgado por Pretoma y un grupo de pescadores comerciales que no practican pesca artesanal, es prioritario aclarar que el señor Víctor Rocha en esta oportunidad actuó en representación del Frente Cívico del Sector Pesquero de Golfito, al cual no pertenecemos como pescadores artesanales de pequeña escala.” (Leer el comunicado)
